Distance Learning
Distance learning refers
to the mode of study where the student "studies" from a
distance without having to attend physical classrooms.
This mode is popular with working adults because it
allows them access to higher qualifications which they
would not have time otherwise.
Distance learning mode can
be applied in many ways. Some colleges conduct distance
learning completely by self study correspondence while
some conduct seminars in the weekends on regular basis,
for example, once a semester. The defining factor here
is that learning takes place outside of the physical
educational institute. Distance learning courses are
conducted both by traditional universities/colleges and
purely virtual institutions. There is normally no
difference in the quality of education via distance
learning compared to conventional learning and some
traditional and established universities offers
the same qualification vide both modes of delivery. For
example EBS- Heriot Watt's Masters Degrees.
However, distance learning
is considered better for adult learners since the course
structure is more flexible, tuition fees are lower and
in certain cases the mode of assessment can be more
suitable .
